Interview with Patrick Krappie, Acting CEO, Technology Innovation Agency, at World Climate Summit

In this video interview, Patrick Krappie, Acting CEO, the Technology Innovation Agency (TIA), an entity of the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI) shares the Agency’s initiatives and plans to support government achieve climate goals in South Africa through technological innovations, as well as why TIA is participating at World Climate Summit.


As a Summit Partner, the Technology Innovation Agency was represented at World Climate Summit - The Investment COP 2022 by Matsi Modise, TIA Board Chairperson, who was a keynote speaker at Solution Session “Africa on the Front Line - Towards a Resilient Future: Outlook on Africa’s 2030 Commitments and Resilient Future Pathways”.

The Technology Innovation Agency (TIA) is an entity of the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI). TIA is mandated through the Technology Innovation Agency Act, No. 26 of 2008, to promote the development and exploitation of discoveries, inventions and innovations to improve the quality of life for all South Africans by bridging the innovation chasm between research and commercialisation. TIA is an active funder, connector and facilitator. Partnerships and collaborations are vital to TIA effectively fulfilling this role. TIA serves as the key national institutional intervention to facilitate the translation of South Africa’s knowledge resources emanating from Higher Education Institutions (HEIs), Science Councils (SCs), other public entities, and the private sector into sustainable socio-economic opportunities.

About Patrick Krappie – Acting CEO TIA

Patrick Krappie comes from a strong management background, having held senior positions in government institutions specialising in economic policy and negotiations. He holds an Honours degree in economics and has vast international working experience in England and Switzerland. In these roles, he served as a diplomat for 8 years representing South Africa as a negotiator in the World Trade Organization, World Intellectual Property Organization and the United Nation Conference for Trade and Development. In addition, he served in the Organization for Economic Cooperation Development’s (OECD) Development assistance committees where South Africa is an associate member. He then joined the Presidential Task Team serving as Deputy envoy in the negotiation for the establishment of the BRICS, the latter’s participation and association with the G8 and the ultimate establishment of G20. His last venture involved the establishment of the Technology Innovation Agency (TIA) in 2009, facilitating the merger of seven pre-existing business entities of the Department of Science and Technology with a total staff compliment of 240 employees. Since then he has served in various senior management and executive roles and currently serves as Acting CEO of TIA.
